General Update

I thought this week I’d just write a little about me, what’s going on and a General Update (I’m stood to attention and saluting for the General.) On coming back from Brighton last week, we had a handyman in to do some odd jobs around the house. It’s strange how new something can look with a shelf up and populated, or a lick of paint on a wall. Our house is feeling more like a home every week. I have to say, stereotypically the Lovely Girlfriend has final say on most of the ‘choices’ around the house and I do pitch in, but she just knows what goes with what and what colours work etc.

On Monday of last week, we both got an alert from the NHS Covid-19 app telling us we needed to self-isolate immediately and go and get tested. Very surprising and your mind races to see if anyone has coughed around you recently or looked like they may be ill. I had to quickly sort out my colleagues at work to stand in for me (they did a great job), grab some work I could do at home and leave. We both were tested on the Tuesday morning and had negative (phew!) results by the Wednesday morning. Even though we were negative, we were informed we had to stay at home until Saturday at midnight because there’s always a possibility we may have developed symptoms by day ten. The reason our self-isolation period was only five and a half days was because our ‘contact’ had been four and a half days earlier. Therefore we’d already been through four and a half days of potential for symptoms to present so we were extremely lucky that we were negative and didn’t pass anything on during that time.

I got very grumpy on the Wednesday morning when we were negative but still had to remain at home. The person on the end of the phone for the NHS who I checked with was very polite and professional. I think my brain immediately went back to the dark days of lockdown 1.0 even though our period of isolation was not long at all. I feel stupid that I had to remind myself that others have fared a lot worse. Our period of isolation was skewered by pictures and then video of our ex-Health Secretary snogging his aide in his office. It was particularly galling to have to stay at home, when negative when that rat-weasel was playing hard and fast with the rules/guidelines he had set. The internet though saved the day and provided some much needed levity. Some favourites below. And I retain the right to waffle on about this subject at another time, but I don’t think I’ve gotten through my anger properly to write something that isn’t an incoherent sweary ranty mess. I do feel sorry for the partners of these douche-canoes. They don’t deserve the media attention they are getting or the heartbreak.

I did want to end by saying thanks for reading. I’m enjoying this process and having an avenue to write again and I really appreciate you the reader. Stay safe.
