This week I wanted to write about something I find fun even though it may be looked on as a bit childish. I’ve never been worried about that really, but sometimes it’s fun to do something that you find fun and being a bit sheepish about it shouldn’t stop you from doing it or telling everyone on your blog.
I love Lego. If you’ve shopped for some Lego, you know it’s bloody expensive. I try not to go on the website or if I’m passing the shop, I have to struggle to not go in. Limiting myself on the purchase of Lego is definitely key, because I think I wouldn’t have a lot of money left if I just let my wallet go. I remember playing with Lego when I was a wee child. We had all these different sets that we probably built once so that it was all neat and proper and then took apart and mixed it in with all the other Lego we had. We had pirates fighting spacemen and a train set. We spent hours putting together odd Lego sets and having fun. Mum still has a treasure chest (yes an actual treasure chest) full of Lego which sometimes comes out and gets played with by a niece or a nephew. It came in handy recently actually when I was building a new model and there was a piece missing! Fortunately I found one in the chest.

Nowadays the view seems to have changed. Lego is more about the model, building it and then shoving it on a shelf to look at. I certainly subscribe to this and it would pain me greatly if all of my sets were taken apart and mixed up. I have a few sets that I’ve brought over the years and they’re mainly Star Wars themed. I even have the Ultimate Edition Millennium Falcon set squirrelled away waiting for a rainy day for me to put together. It’s fucking huge and I don’t have anywhere to put it yet.
I love putting together a Lego set. It’s an activity where I have to concentrate on the little pieces in front of me to create the bigger model. I’m not really that great with things like DIY or puzzles or things like that, I was a dreadful fitter when I did that job. Too slow on the uptake and too slow to be effectual. I just didn’t get it. But Lego is the right level for me. Gently opening the box and sorting the bags and reading the instruction manual, it’s just fun. And at the end of it, you have this awesome model that you can… look at. They’re not really that useful to be honest.
I’m currently putting together a Lego globe. When I saw it advertised it just tickled me that I could have a globe and it be made out of Lego. I wanted a globe as an adornment for the home, but a Lego one just tipped me over the edge, I had to have it. It’s a bit more technical than what I’m used to, but I’m getting there.
