Welcome to 2024! – Long Read

Welcome to 2024!

The Post Office scandal. It’s proper kicked off. Now not to sound smug, but I’ve been reading about this absolute fucking travesty for a long time. I have a subscription to Private Eye magazine and they’ve been wanging on about this for as long as I can remember. It’s the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history. And it takes a four part ITV drama (which I haven’t bothered to watch) to get things moving at a decent pace. It just shows what politicians can do when they believe there’s pressure to actually do something. But it’s fucking disgusting that they’re jumping on the bandwagon now when it’s been known about for quite some time.

This year is an election year for us and I will continue to vent about our flaming dumpster juice of a government right up until the vote. Fuck the Tories and all who sail in them. I would encourage you all to ensure you’re on the voting register and are ready to make your mark. I would also encourage some tactical voting if you believe you’re in a constituency where voting for the party you would like to vote for won’t make a difference. Please hold your nose and vote for whomsoever will kick these cunts out of office. I would love to see a decimation, however I’m not sure it’s likely. But they do need to go. Look, you may not agree with my political leanings and that’s good, a difference in opinion and viewpoint is needed. So to finish this paragraph… go and vote. If you’re voting, you’re engaging with the democratic process and regardless of who you vote for, democracy is the best crappy system we have.

This year is an election year for quite a few democracies. The big one to watch is the USA because it has the most impact on the rest of the world, definitely including us. And Trumpington is openly telling everyone in newscasts and at rallies that he’s going to be a dictator if he gets back in. He’s letting everyone know he’s out for vengeance as well. O and he’d stop the war in Ukraine on day one. Sure. It’s going to be an interesting year on that front.

I, once again, am acting in a play at Market Harborough Theatre. It goes up in April, details in posts to follow on how you can get your ticket. It’s called The Anniversary and is about a matriarch who owns a family business, has three sons and she’s basically evil and wants to keep her sons too close. I play the youngest son and I’m really looking forward to starting rehearsals soon. It’s a dark comedy which I’m happy about because my last two shows were really emotionally heavy. And I’m working with lovely people who I’ve already worked with in the past and some great new people. Also I’ve come to the realisation that I need to start auditioning for parts that are a bit more age appropriate for me. My character is twenty-eight. I am significantly older than that. Over Christmas, my beard started to go proper grey so I don’t think I’m going to be getting away with playing parts in their twenties any more.

I’ve written in the past about how I don’t like new year’s resolutions. I do think they’re a little dumb. However in discussions with Mum and my therapist it has come to my attention that I don’t tend to take time off from life. I’m hoping this year I can get away a bit more, whether it be cute little breaks in the UK OR I’ve not been to foreign climes since February 2020 so I’m hoping to actually go abroad this year as well. We’ll see.

To finish, let’s discuss our actual Home Secretary, James ‘I Make Jokes About Drugging My Wife’ Cleverly. At some pre-Christmas drinks in Downing Street, he actually joked about spiking his wife’s drink with a drug used to assist the raping of other human beings. On the very fucking day his department warned that joking about this exact topic helps to normalise the spiking of drinks. And at the time of my typing this, he’s still in post. Ok, it was joke, a poor joke, and he has apologised. BUT he openly undermined his own department’s messaging on the same day that the messaging went out, not to mention the hurt and harm that his comments might cause to those who have already been through these types of devastating attacks. How??? How is he still Home Secretary? These fucking people think they’re untouchable. Hopefully not for long, can’t wait to see the back of them as they get voted out of office.

And remember, just before I go, if you’d like to write for the blog, please get in contact via: catchup@abridgedblog.co.uk and we can get you published. I’d love to encourage new authors to the blog and those who have already provided their thoughts. Come one, come all!
