We are a very, very generous country.

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson claims that we are a very generous country. See above. And I believe in general that we are. Or we the people are. Not so sure about the government. It heartens me to see the charitable efforts of the British people to help the people of Ukraine. But our government are not as generous as old Johnson makes out when it comes to refugees. As Ukrainian refugees started to flee war, the border countries took in thousands and thousands of refugees. And rightly so. A sense of family in Europe has meant that these desperate people were welcomed openly. As I type this, Poland alone has taken over a million refugees, seemingly without blinking or asking for any paperwork or visas.

Whilst this was happening, our government was physically avoiding doing what every other county in Europe were doing – welcoming Ukrainian refugees without asking for visas or paperwork. Those countries were taking people in, ensuring they were fed, warm, safe and then processing them so they knew who they were and what help they needed. Our government was castigated for only letting in a few hundred refugees when others were taking thousands. They put up cement roadblocks and plotted and created ‘schemes’ for refugees to apply to. I’m lucky enough to have never fled a warzone, but I imagine it might be quite difficult to find a computer to fill in an eleven page document, have a scanner to scan in my ID and ensure it’s in the correct format for the UK’s system to accept it. O that’s if I can understand the language this form is in. We are not doing our bit to help out in this regard.

Johnson and his lickspittles spaffed on about being world leading in this area and used the word ‘surge’ quite a bit. As if this verb will convey that they are doing something swiftly and not dragging their heels because they don’t like foreign people coming here unless they’re tourists with money to spend. Or wealthy people who like to share their ill-gotten gains for political influence. cough oligarchs cough Our intelligence services told the government weeks ago that an invasion was likely so why weren’t we planning then? Why have we waited until the shit hits the fan and then scrabbled around putting something in place? We’re a country that has woken up with morning wood over ‘controlling our borders’ and we’re still on the toilet waiting for the rush of blood to our collective ‘heads’ to subside so we can ‘evacuate’ and then help others evacuate.

Government ministers have actually said aloud, in public, that we are the first country in the world to create a visa system to help Ukrainians and we are leading the world in this, like it’s something to be proud of. No other fucker is asking for paperwork. Our visa service has sent emails to Ukrainian refugees requesting that they go back to Kyiv to a visa processing centre which is closed, because it’s in the middle of an active warzone. When refugees got to Calais they were shamefully sent away and not allowed to enter the UK because they didn’t have the correct paperwork. They had to go back to Brussels or Paris to have their paperwork processed. And then Priti Patel lied that a centre had been set up in Calais when no such thing had happened. Then they set up a centre in Lille for processing, seventy miles away from Calais. So getting closer to the channel crossing, but they will not give out the address or contact details of the centre publicly because they don’t want it flooded with the wrong sort of refugees. They’re celebrating their obstacles, the hypocritical shit stains.

I mentioned above that the countries who neighbour Ukraine have taken the majority of the refugees and that’s only natural. Our government have used geography as an excuse as to why we haven’t taken more refugees. And that does have some slight merit, until you realise that Ireland had taken in, at one point, ten times the amount of refugees that we had. Ireland. Definitely further away from Ukraine than England. And why are we asking for paperwork? Why are we demanding these distressed people jump through our frilly hoops? Because Priti Patel believes the women, children and elderly that are fleeing could be Russian spies. I mentioned scaremongering in part 1 and it’s a bloody good tactic for politicians to use for manipulation. Need the masses to believe something? Simple – scare them. Fear is a great motivator. Well the government are still using the fear of ‘other’ people to justify the reason why we need visa applications.
