Things I Know to be True

These are the things I know to be true: I am rehearsing a new show and it is opening soon. Market Harborough Drama Society are putting on the above play and I just happen to be in it. Funny that. Let me wang on for a bit about it and then below will be a button that you can click on to get your tickets. Because you won’t want to miss it.

This one will kick you in the feels. Like right in the feels. You’ll wince and everything. The family Price, consisting of Mum – Fran, Dad – Bob and their four adult children – Pip, Mark, Ben and Rosie set the scene early on at home. A well known family unit that are rallying round their youngest member, Rosie, who has come back from travelling in Europe. This slightly chaotic and funny opening is the lily pad on the surface of the pond. Beneath the water lurks the murkier inner workings.

The audience is taken along for a year in the life of this ordinary family and the issues they have to navigate and work through. The politics of not doing what your Mum or Dad expects are explored and sometimes explosively resolved or unresolved. Fran the hardworking nurse and Bob the retired car plant worker don’t understand their kids and the tension between the two generations is palpable. How do you reconcile six divergent adult lives that are tugging in different directions?

I play Ben, the cocksure younger brother who works in finance and lives the high life. We’re introduced to Ben as a son who isn’t that interested in family life unless he can get something from it. A young man who doesn’t commit to relationships or anything else for that matter. If he can get something out of it, great, if not, he’s off. I’m enjoying playing Ben. I feel sense a freedom for most of the play because the character is allowed to get away with a few things.

Things I Know to be True is directed by Hazel Cook with the assistance of a whole boat load of willing volunteers. I always want to express how grateful I am to everyone who contributes to put on a show at Market Harborough Theatre. It is the greatest privilege for me, an amateur actor, that I get to turn up and act and concentrate on that alone, knowing that everything else is being dealt with.
