Sub-heading: General Election Now!
I take a lot of notice of politics, much to my chagrin. I really don’t want to have to notice it until a local or general election is coming up, but after that referendum that happened in 2016 it has consumed a part of my brain. I believe politics is meant to be boring. What I would love is for us all to go about our daily business knowing that our politicians are governing as they should and making decisions based on what they think is best for the country at that time. If you’ve read the blog for a while, you might think I’m left wing, but I don’t believe I’m a bird at all. Just someone down the centre, trying not to unfurl in either direction.

I say all of the above to preface the fact that I fucking hate our current Tory government. The amount of shit they’ve got up to over the last thirteen years is criminal. They seem to be in power to line the pockets of themselves, their families and friends. You just have to look at the VIP lane for contractors during Covid to understand the billions wasted on all sorts of contracts that went to family, acquaintances and friends of our current Tory government. And they have degraded our democracy. Sending their cronies to the Lords. Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson’s resignation honours list made a thirty year old ‘special advisor’ the youngest lifelong member of the House of Lords. Illegally proroguing parliament (Johnson again) and making Suella Braverman our Home Secretary again, six days after stepping down for breaking the ministerial code. This was our AI Prime Minister, Rishi Stop the Seven Bins Sunak. O and Nadine Dorries. Do I have to explain that one?
As a point of balance, I’m not that keen on Labour either. They have some people I find impressive like Yvette Cooper. I would not want to face her across the despatch box. I find Wes Streeting to be impressive but also in the pocket sometimes of private healthcare which makes me worry for the NHS and the change and back-up it needs. David Lammy is alright I suppose and I have issues with Keir Starmer. I’ve warmed to him as he seems to have loosened up, but he seems so intent on winning he’s missing some tricks. If Labour want to be in power for a long time our first past the post voting system needs changing. Proportional representation has been muted. I think, fuck it, let’s try it. It can’t be any worse than the flaming bin juice we currently have to stomach.
And I suppose this is my point. We need a change now. The recent by-elections have shown that the electorate want out of this house of horrors sharpish. Tamworth is a constituency that flip flops to whomever is in power. Labour won it last week and overturned a majority of 19,000 votes. This is huge. Mid Bedfordshire has been held by the Tories for over ninety years and Labour won it last week by overturning a margin of 24,000. This is huger! And like a dying carcass with bits being stripped off it by political vultures, a Tory MP local to me has this week been suspended for bullying and being sexually inappropriate around a former member of staff. I believe another by-election beckons. This government is done. General election now please.
PS – Just a little look into the wings of the blog. I normally finish writing the week’s missive on a Thursday ready for a Friday publication. And then overnight it broke that another Tory MP has been arrested on suspicion of rape and the possession of controlled substances. Just thought I’d keep you up to date.
