This week is the turn of Jon and his blog. I met Jon when I went to join the Northants Phantoms, a non-contact or flag, American football team based in Northampton. Neither Jon or I are involved with the team any more, but if it tickles your fancy, get in touch and I can let you know when training is and we can get you involved.

Jon was Head Coach and coach of the defence. I turned up and ran around a bit and caught some balls and made some tackles. Over about ten years we became friends and I progressed to becoming Jon’s assistant coach, mainly due to injuries. We share a love of board games, sometimes playing Risk with the boys. Jon’s knowledge of the NFL astounds me sometimes and he is sneakily tactical minded.
Jon also happens to have Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD). Muscular Dystrophy is a collective term for over thirty recognised types of Muscular Dystrophy resulting in weakened muscles and various other symptoms. These genetic conditions can lead to a shortened life span. Jon uses an electric chair and has an adapted vehicle, which when you look inside it looks a little like a spaceship with all these levers, buttons and joysticks. Jon’s blog is about his life with CMD, what it is, how he copes and to help raise awareness. As Jon writes himself, there is no cure for any form of Muscular Dystrophy and I believe it’s important that we all understand a little more about it. Jon writes in a factual way, imparting the information we need clearly to understand his life.
