Preparing to Vote

Putting my obvious political views aside for this blog post, I’d like to assist in your preparation to vote in the general election. I’m sure most of you will be sorted, but there are some key dates and things that need to be done and if I can help one person get sorted, it will be worth it. My Dad always encouraged me to use this special power we get as we live in a democracy, because we have the ability to have a say on who leads us. Many don’t. And if we vote for the losing side, we at least have a right to whinge about what a terrible mess we think the winning side are making of the country.

First off you need to be registered to vote. You need to register by Tuesday 18 June. You can do that here:

Once you’ve registered to vote, you can pop along to vote on the big day itself. However if you know you’re going to be away on the day or you just don’t fancy the walk down to the polling station, you can register to vote by post. This must be done by Wednesday 19 June and you can do that here:

Send off your postal vote with enough time so it gets to the elections team at your local council by 10pm on polling day so it can be counted.

I actually quite enjoy going to vote. It’s a small process that has big consequences and just makes me feel involved in this big thing that’s happening. Remember though that you will need ID to vote on the day. The list of appropriate ID can be found here:

If you don’t have ID, you can apply for voter ID. You can do that here:

The BIG date for your calendars: Thursday 4 July. The day itself. Make sure you know where your local polling station is, when it is open (usually 7am to 10pm) and remember to take appropriate ID. You’ll receive your polling card in the post before the big day with all the appropriate information. Go forth and vote!
