I used to write poetry all the time, way back when twenty years ago. My final piece of work for my university degree was a booklet of ten poems and an essay breaking them all down. I had time back then to think, feel, mould words into stanzas that maybe made sense when linked together. I have published some poetry before by guest author, Chris and I’ve always intended to publish some of my own. I might go back and have a little look at some of my old poems, edit them a bit and then publish some. But for now, I was moved this week to write a poem about something that has burrowed its way into my brain. I didn’t really know how to write about it as a blog post, but some poetry sprung forth instead. My semi random musings are below and you can check out Chris’ poem by clicking on the button below:

Our Island of Strangers
That little island of strangers, squalid in its infamy.
Decrepit indigenous drooling venom, cowering in their fetid corners.
Seeking scapegoats, matted hair wrapped in white and red.
A shimmering shade of difference stands plethora before me,
A subtle nod, a little smile, a hand stretched to take mine,
Colleagues, friends, lovers, family. You are welcome here.
Our friends revel with us on our small spit of land, impulsive smiles,
Glittering eyes, shared earth. We whirl together across twisting paths taken,
Spurred forth by Caerus, carried aloft by Lakshmi and prodded by Freyja.
