Lieutenant Commander Update

Howdy cowpokes, no idea why the Americanised greeting, but it seemed whimsical and I like whimsical. An update post this week. Things are busy, busy, busy. Work is busy, social life is busy. O and I’m going to Wales soon for a little weekend break, should be fun. I’ve not been to Wales (apart from a couple of whistle stop trips to Cardiff) since graduating University many, many, many, many years ago. Many years ago. So it’ll be great to be back in country with some great company.

I’ve always contemplated ideas on how to expand and / or upgrade the blog. And a political pundit that I follow on social media publishes a Substack every week. Well he’s now started to record it, so it’s like a blog post, only longer and a shit load better than mine, even though they are politics based, and he’s made it into a podcast type thing. So he writes his post and then reads it for the discerning follower. And this made me think I could do the same thing. WordPress, the website this is based on, must have some plugins that I can use to set this up. My phone will record me in a simple manner, not the best quality, but good enough, and then you can hear me read the blog. And I’ll add in a bit of stuff and banter along the way. And I might go back and record some of my old favourite posts. Lots to do. I’m hoping to have this up and running soon, but please see above. I’m busy, so you might not hear my dulcet tones too swiftly. We’ll see. Also every fucker has a podcast, I know. It won’t be an actual podcast, just me reading the blog post… or will it. No it won’t be a podcast… yet. You’ve been warned.

I went to see the touring production of Kinky Boots this week in Oxford. As a lad from Northampton, the story, film, musical speak a lot to my heritage. As I type this, I’m standing in an old boot and shoe factory in Northampton. I’ve never seen the film, although I do love Chiwetel Ejiofor and I didn’t really know much of the story apart from the bare bones. There are many parallels with my actual life and the story of Charlie, which hit home quite a bit. The references to Northampton in the musical threw me a little as it’s a little incongruous to have your home town referenced in a big stage production. And Charlie was wearing an old fashioned Northampton Town Football Club scarf every now and then which was a nice touch. The show itself was… ok. There were flashes of brilliance, the gent playing Lola was great, the young lady playing Lauren was a fantastic performer, managing to get laughs and sympathy all in one line of song and some of the big set pieces were very well done. But in the end it’s a musical and they throw me a lot. The stretched out songs about nothing much, the American accent of the lad who played Charlie when he sang, remember I’m from Northampton and I know how lads from Northampton sing. The way the Charlie character becomes a complete cunt in the second half. Not much for me. But still, a decent night out.

O and to end, Kinky Boots promotes a great message of inclusivity and acceptance of all. We could do with a little more of that at present.
