Guess what…? The Lovely Girlfriend and I went on an awesome trip to Bath. And it was a belated birthday trip due to not being able to go in December last year. Despite the ridiculous weather we had a great time and managed to squeeze quite a few things in. We wandered past the Abbey and popped up to the Royal Crescent. Very nice. Had a look at the price of a flat on the Crescent, baulked and then wandered on. We played mini golf and succeeded at not getting wet in the rain. We drew! The Lovely Girlfriend is a demon with the putter. And we went to a restaurant underground called Sotto Sotto. A fancy Italian place that was gooooooddddd. Generally everyone was being good with social distancing, hand sanitisation and mask wearing, but I could tell that these measures are slipping. I think that’s to be expected and a natural consequence of everyone trying to get back to normal.

One of the main reasons we went was to see The Play That Goes Wrong at Theatre Royal Bath. As I’ve written in the past, I love this play. This is definitely the fourth time I’ve seen it (Derngate – Northampton, Curve – Leicester, Duchess – London and now Royal – Bath.) I cannot get enough and there’s a bit in the second half where I still have no idea how a certain thing happens. I won’t spoil that thing. The conceit of the play is that your local amateur dramatical society are putting on a murder mystery and during this show within a show, everything goes wrong. It’s hilarious and I always leave with my face aching from laughing too much. If it is coming to a venue near you as it is currently touring, go and see it.

It was good to get away and actually be away. Normally when I’m off on a work day, I leave my email notifications on and answer when I can. It was a Friday when we went and I moved my email icon to hide it and turned off notifications for a couple of days. The physicality of making these changes ensures that I can forget work for a while and wonder on what I’m actually doing. I find this so difficult to do at any time and so it’s important for me to do this every once in a while as it’s not fair on the Lovely Girlfriend. I still do struggle not to think about work when I’m not there and I struggle with work thoughts that invade my brain at random times. This gets on my nerves so I can only imagine the impact this has on those around me. I have to scramble for my phone and add a new calendar entry to remind myself to do random thing A. when I get back to work. Taking a break was great.
