Controlling Our Borders – Part 4 – Long Read

Welcome to Part 4 of Controlling Our Borders. You can read Parts 1, 2 and 3 by clicking on the buttons below.

The new Nationality and Borders Bill seems to be the crowning glory of the current government. It seeks to criminalise and restrict the rights of all people arriving in the UK outside of pre-arranged schemes. Therefore Ukrainians fleeing war in their country will be here illegally if they do not come over with the correct paperwork under this potential legislation. And I think that is why we are demanding paperwork now and not just letting Ukrainian refugees in. If we allow them to come to the UK without a certain level of checks, what is the point of this new bill? This frightening ideological position is hampering the safety of human beings. Refugees will need safe and set out routes to come here but outside of the ‘schemes’ set up for the Ukrainian refugees, there aren’t any for anyone from any other country.

The bill has gone back and forth from MPs to the Lords. Whilst with the Lords, they have tried to strip out certain sections which make coming to the UK as a refugee nigh on impossible. And they tried to get rid of the clause whereby British citizenship could be stripped from a refugee, who manages to gain citizenship, without their knowledge or warning. So someone could be here legally and then next minute illegally and not even know. When the bill goes back to the Commons, the governments puts those sections back in. And we keep claiming that foreign nationals want to come here because we’re the bestest and we have a great healthcare and benefits systems. Like we’re the fucking promised land. I would remind everyone to look around you, out your windows and have a think about whether that is true. I love my country, but we could do with a good scrub in the tub. Austerity and the cost of living crisis means that we’re no longer the most shiniest of baubles.

And I can’t help but think that the schemes, the visas, the frustrations, the issues with trying to get to the UK is deliberate because they don’t want refugees to come here. They think their voters, in the long run, don’t want refugees and therefore this is a vote winner. We are deliberately and with malice, frustrating the efforts of those who want to help. There’s news of hours being needed to fill in forms. And then once they’re filled in, days go by without hearing whether the paperwork is progressing through the system. All this whilst Ukrainian people, desperate for some help, are stuck in limbo and the Great British people yearning to help.

In closing this mammoth serial I want to set out a list of certain current cabinet ministers and their heritage. These people are openly hostile to refugees and set out policy to keep them out and frustrate efforts to help desperate human beings. And I do want to make it quite clear I don’t have an issue with the heritage of these people, but I do have a problem with them pulling the ladder up behind them.

PS – I Hate This

I’ve genuinely hated writing this four part blog. Hated every second whilst jabbing out every word. But I saw this on Twitter this week and it broke me a little. You may have already seen it and I don’t know how to process it properly.

A Ukrainian mother wrote their family contacts on the body of their child in case the worst happens and the child is left parentless. Now this is only one instance and from what I could find out, the child and her family are now safe, but what the actual fuck. Now re-read every part of Controlling Our Borders and let me know if you think our government should be doing a little more.
